Relationships
Talk0this wiki
One of the main plot points of Friends is the struggle to find love. The following is a list of relationships the six main characters have had throughout the series, sorted by character.
Contents |
Rachel
Edit
Barry Farber
Edit

Added by VolleyChick14Barry Farber was engaged to Rachel, but she leaves him at the altar just prior to the beginning of the pilot in season one. Apparently, she was more turned on by a gravy boat than by Barry. They later briefly reconcile despite the latter's recent engagement to Mindy Hunter, and he chooses Mindy over Rachel when the two women confront him. Rachel and Mindy both break up with him but Mindy soon changes her mind and decides to marry him. This ceremony happens in The One With Barry and Mindy's Wedding, where Rachel makes an appearance as a bridesmaid. They later divorce when he cheats on her again.
Paolo
Edit

Added by VolleyChick14Rachel meets Paolo, a dark, attractive Italian man in The One With The Blackout, while trying to return a lost cat (who turns out to belong to him). He speaks very little English and thier relationship starts out as being based around sex. Ross becomes very jealous of Paolo and mocks him behind his back constantly. Rachel and Paolo have great sex and Paolo always buys Rachel fancy jewlery. Rachel breaks up with Paolo after Phoebe reveals to her that he had made a pass at her after showing up at her massage parlour. During season two, while Rachel was angry with Ross, she went to Paolo's apartment and they spent the night together and had sex again. When her friends confront her about this, Rachel makes it clear that she does not want to start things up with Paolo again and that it was just a one night stand.
Russ
Edit

Added by VolleyChick14In The One With Russ, Rachel dates a man named Russ, who to the bewilderment of her friends looks and acts eerily similar to Ross. Rachel bizarrely does not see the multiple similarities between Ross and Russ, and even more bizarrely, neither do either of them. Rachel dates Russ as a rebound relationship after breaking up with Ross upon learning of a list of her pros and cons he had written up whilst trying to decide whether to date her or Julie, but the fact that she would date a man who resembles him so much - even if she hasn't noticed the aforementioned resemblances - seems to strongly imply that she is still attracted to him, and the other friends actually suggest this theory to her. Eventually, when Rachel sees the two arguing, she finally sees the similarites between them and walks away, disturbed. She later breaks up with Russ, who consequently becomes depressed and one day while hanging out at the coffee shop is spotted by Ross' ex-girlfriend Julie, who is likewise depressed after Ross broke up with her. Julie is attracted to Russ as soon as she sees him, and when she speaks to him, they begin a relationship. However, Julie, like Rachel at first, most likely hasn't noticed how much Russ resembles Ross.
Joshua
Edit

Added by VolleyChick14Rachel dates Joshua for 5 episodes in Season 4. The two of them meet for the first time while she is working as a personal shopper at Bloomingdales. Joshua comes in after his ex-wife burns all his clothing and he needs a whole new wardrobe. Rachel develops a crush on Joshua and sends him a number of signals, all of which slip by him completely. Rachel gets him two Knicks tickets so they can go on a date but Joshua thinks she is giving them to him so that he can take his nephew to the Knicks game instead. Joshua is invited to Monica and Rachel's apartment for a party with the friends and Rachel wears her cheerleading outfit which leads Joshua to fall for her. The two finally date, but break up after Rachel hastily proposes to Joshua after 4 dates in The One With All The Wedding Dresses. Rachel calls Joshua to apologize to him but when he arrives at her apartment, Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe are all wearing wedding dresses which freaks Joshua out and he leaves again.
Paul Stevens
Edit

Added by VolleyChick14In Season 6, Ross asks his friends to help him look good in front of his girlfriend's (who is one of his students at the university) father, Paul. Instead of helping Ross, Rachel goes out with Paul. This lasts only a short while after she learns that he can be extremely emotional. After an entire day of him crying and conjuring up his past memories, he eventually pulls himself together and apoligizes to her for overwhelming her so much with all his crying, and they make up and have sex. But when he can't keep himself together afterwards and starts bawling again, she breaks up with him.
Tag Jones
Edit

Added by VolleyChick14Tag appears in 7 episodes between Season 7 and Season 8. Rachels hires him as her assistant at Ralph Lauren and they eventually date. Rachel and Tag enjoy the sex and Tag is five years younger than Rachel. Tag gets along with Rachel's friends. On Rachel's thirtieth birthday, Tag tries to cheer Rachel up since she feels middle aged and he warns her friends what not to say to her. The relationship ends on Rachel's thirtieth birthday in The One Where They All Turn Thirty when Rachel breaks up with Tag because he's too young and not ready for a serious relationship. Rachel briefly regrets leaving Tag but shrugs it off. In season eight, after Rachel is revealed to be pregnant, Phoebe recognizes a red sweater that the father of Rachel's baby wore and thought it was Tag's. They invite Tag to Central Perk when it turns out that Tag already had his sweater. Tag tells Rachel he wants to get back together but when she reveals to be pregnant he takes it back and leaves. Ross is revealed to be the father.
Gavin Mitchell
Edit

Added by VolleyChick14Gavin appears in 3 episodes in Season 9. He works as Rachel's replacement at Ralph Lauren during her maternity leave. When Rachel returns to work, she fears that Gavin is trying to take over her job. After a rocky start, the two end up kissing on Monica and Chandler's balcony in The One With Phoebe's Rats. They break it off the next day after Rachel has trouble deciding where she is in her relationship with Ross and doesn't feel the timing is right for a new relationship.
Joey Tribbiani
Edit

Added by VolleyChick14In season 8, Joey develops feelings for Rachel after they had gone out on a date. When Joey tells Rachel about his feelings, Rachel turns him down and Joey soon gets over those feelings. Later, in season 9, Rachel has a romantic dream about Joey and can't get over her feelings. When Joey starts to date a girl named Charlie, Rachel starts to get jealous in Barbados and can't hold her feeling much longer. So when she tells Joey her feelings after him and Charlie break up, he is surprised and turns Rachel down because he couldn't do that to Ross. A minute after Joey talks to Rachel he sees Ross and Charlie kissing, so Joey goes up to Rachel's room and starts to kiss her for a while. When everybody heads back to New York, Ross tries to tell Joey what happened between him and Charlie. Joey also tries to tell Ross what happened between him and Rachel, but his plan backfires later. Joey and Rachel can't take it anymore so they start to kiss, when Ross catches them. Ross acts strangely about adjusting to this, constantly insisting that he is "fine!". However, Ross thinks it is time for all of them to move on. The next day Joey and Rachel try to make love for the first time, but they are both nervous. The second time they attempt it, they still feel uncomfortable and Rachel accidentally hurts Joey, so they give up and decide to remain as close friends.

Edit

Added by SusanoliviaEthan appeared in "The One With The Ick Factor". Monica dated him under the impression that he was a senior in college. Ethan dated her under the impression that she was 22. Before sleeping together, Ethan tells Monica that he is a virgin. Afterwards, Monica tells him that she is really 26 to which he reveals that he is really a senior in high school. Monica is repulsed at what she has done and stops calling him.
Ethan shows up at Central Perk to try and persuade her to change her mind, but she tells him that "it's icky". They come to the conclusion that they could have had something special if their age gap wasn't so drastic, or if they lived in "Biblical times".
Jean-Claude Van Damme
Edit
Monica has a very brief stint with Jean-Claude Van Damme in Season 2 after seeing him on the set of Outbreak 2: The Virus Takes Manhattan. Too nervous to talk to him, she makes Rachel do it for her. Jean-Claude is instead interested in Rachel. After fighting with Monica, Rachel sets her and Jean-Claude up on a date, maliciously telling Jean-Claude that Monica wanted to have a threesome with him and Drew Barrymore.
Richard Burke
Edit

Added by SusanoliviaMonica's longtime boyfriend Richard Burke, twenty-one years her senior, was introduced to her when she was a child as her old optician and family friend. Later, they meet at her parent's party where she and Phoebe are helping. Monica and Richard date for a long time, keeping it secret from her parents as she knew that they would be shocked. They eventually find out and after initial shock, accept the relationship. They eventually break up because Richard does not want to have children again, whereas Monica does.
Julio
Edit
In The One With All The Jealousy, Monica hooks up with "poet" and busboy Julio from work. He writes a poem called "The Empty Vase" and Phoebe postulates that the poem is about Monica being "empty." Monica confronts Julio and finds out the poem is not about her, but about ALL women, "especially all American women". She dumps Julio and puts the icing on the cake by sending a barber shop quartet to the diner to sing him an insulting break up song.
Pete Becker
Edit

Added by SusanoliviaMillionaire who invented MOS-865 (Friends universe alternative to MS-DOS). At first, Pete has feelings for Monica that she does not reciprocate, despite attempts on her part to force herself to feel this way. Later he offers her a job in a restaurant he bought, hoping to win her affection. After a lot of denial, Monica realizes that she is attracted to Pete, and they start dating. Monica eventually breaks up with him, because Pete refuses to give up his dream of being the Ultimate Fighting Champion and she cannot bear to see him get hurt in the ring as he is clearly not cut out for the sport.

Timothy Burke
Edit
Added by SusanoliviaIn "The One With Chandler In A Box", Monica runs into Richard's son, Timothy, but it doesn't go far after their first kiss reminds Monica of Richard and Timothy of a younger version of his mother. Monica still had feelings for Richard and couldn't go through with the relationship.
Chandler Bing

Monica and Chandler get married and in the eighth season finale, they decide to have their own baby. In season nine, Monica and Chandler are not able to have a baby so they choose to adopt. In season ten, they adopt from a pregnant woman named Erica. Erica gives birth to twins in the series finale. Added by SusanoliviaNot much is known about his relationship with Phoebe, but it is mostly based on sex. He tries to make things move forward with her when he asks her to move in. She is reluctant at first because he asks too soon, but after Chandler's talk with Gary and Gary's interrogation of Phoebe, she accepts. The moving-in lasts only one day, however, as on the very first morning, he shoots a bird just because it's chirping too loudly. Phoebe is very disturbed by this and breaks up with him.
Mike Hannigan
Edit

Added by BamboozledWhen Joey and Phoebe agree to do a blind double date with each other, Joey forgets about it until the last minute when she brings it up in conversation with him. To prevent her from discovering that he has forgotten about her date, he randomly chooses the name Mike as the fictional man he has fixed her up with. He soon realizes that (apart from all the ones she knows) he doesn't know any men, let alone men called Mike. In desperation, he runs into Central Perk shouting "Mike!". Mike Hannigan responds, so Joey impulsively fixes him up with Phoebe. However, on the date, Joey accidentally makes it clear that he doesn't know who Mike is, both upsetting Phoebe and turning off the woman she had fixed him up with. However, Mike feels sorry for Phoebe as he watches her leave and when he spots her again in the coffee shop the next day, he explains to her that he had allowed Joey to rope him into the date "because I was told that I'd get a free dinner-which I didn't-and that I'd meet a pretty girl-which I did." Phoebe is clearly flattered by this statement, and they start dating, but break up shortly before moving in together after Mike confesses that he never wants to get married after his first marriage broke down.
Following Phoebe and Mike's break-up, David returns to New York. In Barbados, Monica calls Mike to tell him that David is planning to propose to Phoebe. Mike arrives in Barbados and both men propose to her. Mike goes first, and she decides that she wants to be with him although she does not want to get married yet. David does not get the chance to propose, but flippantly asks Phoebe if she would have chosen him if he had gone first, before leaving.
Later, Mike plans to propose to her on the big screen at a Knicks game, but before he has the chance to she makes a remark on how tacky the idea is, so he leaves to cancel the plan, making her realize what she has done. To compensate, she decides to propose to him in the same way, after being told by the others it didn't seem too desperate. However the crowd at the game think otherwise and Mike does not have a chance to reply over the booing and insults. Mike tries again by putting the ring in a chocolate cake at a restaurant, but she again accidently comments on the idea's cheesyness, so he decides to simply and blatantly get down on one knee and propose. She says yes, and they marry several episodes later.
In The Last One, after Monica and Chandler bring their adopted children home, Mike and Phoebe decide to have children of their own.
Joey
Edit
Every girl in New York
Edit
Joey has not had many long-term relationships due to his commitment issues and lack of morals in that area. However he has repeatedly had one night stands with every woman in New York, or Manhattan at least. Rachel joked that he had gone out with every girl and was going around for a second time. In Central Perk he got the confidence to ask a girl out but didn't because he remembered he had slept with her.

Chandler and his whiny nasal ex-girlfriend Janice have been on and off more than Ross and Rachel. Their relationship is one of the show's many signature recurring gags. When the show begins, they are together,
Added by SusanoliviaTwo months later, they accidentally meet up again through a double date arranged by Joey, but Chandler breaks up with her again on Valentine's Day due to her annoying character traits. By now though, Janice has wisened up and knows he will be back again, or to put it into her words: "Your voice calls out to me like a foghorn - Jaaaniiice, Jaaaaaaaaaniiice".
After his break up with Kathy, he runs into Janice at a nail salon and she has just gotten divorced. He pretends he has to move to Yemen to avoid breaking up with her. Janice reappears several times throughout the series but does not strike up a relationship again, though when she is in labour for the second time she tells him it is his baby as a joke. Chandler twice employs a trick of pretending he still has feelings for her to get rid of her. When she is staying at the apartment he shares with Monica, he says it to make her leave, and when she wants to buy the house next to their new one, he pretends he has feelings for her and wants to have an affair so he and Monica do not have to run into her every day.

For the next year, they have a steady relationship with a few ups and downs, mainly related to their respective long time exes, Janice and Richard.
Chandler decides to propose to Monica, but at the dinner they are interrupted by Richard. To throw her off the scent, Phoebe advises that he should pretend that he is totally against marriage. However, after this, Richard declares his undying love for Monica and she almost leaves Chandler, but Joey tells her the truth about his opinion on marriage. Emily escapes out of the bathroom window and Emily's father alerts Ross that Emily has gone into hiding and never wants to see her estranged husband ever again. Ross tells Emily's parents to tell her that he will be at the airport waiting to go on their honeymoon and that she is still welcome to meet him there. Ross waits for Emily for a long time and he runs into Rachel. He offers to let her come on the honneymoon with him. Rachel agrees and gets on the plane just as Emily arrives. Emily is furious once again and runs away with Ross chasing after her, leading to Rachel going to Greece alone. Ross continually tries to get in contact with Emily but it is hopeless. Emily finally calls Ross to ask him to leave her family alone. Ross convinces Emily to come to New York and be with him on the condition that he never sees or speaks to Rachel ever again. Ross reluctantly agrees. Emily also forces Ross to get a new apartment and all new furniture that is just theirs. Emily calls Ross and realizes Rachel is there and is furious. Ross tells Emily that in order to make their marriage work, she needs to learn to trust him. Emily says she cannot do that and they end up getting divorced. Several months later, Ross learns that Emily is getting remarried and he becomes depressed. Emily calls Ross the day before her wedding saying that she is having second thoughts and wants him to call her back and maybe reconcile.
