[edit] Season summary
During this season, actress Lisa Kudrow became pregnant. This was written into the show by having Phoebe become a surrogate mother to the children of her brother and his wife, Alice Knight. Ross and Rachel briefly reconcile in the premiere but soon break up again. Later on, Rachel finds herself demoted to personal shopper after her boss Joanna dies and the department is abolished. She encounters a new customer, Joshua Bergen, who she develops feelings for. Early in the season, Joey dates a woman named Kathy, who Chandler has a crush on. However, Chandler and Kathy end up kissing and become afraid that Joey may find out. Kathy breaks up with Joey, and when Joey finds out about the affair, he is initially angry, but allows Chandler and Kathy to date. However, mid-season, Chandler breaks up with Kathy when he sees her having simulated sex with her co-star. During the middle of the season, Monica and Rachel are forced to switch apartments with Joey and Chandler after losing a bet on how well the four know each other. They bribe Joey and Chandler to switch back with Knicks season tickets and a one-minute kiss. Mid-season, having moved on, Ross is set up by Rachel for a date to the opera with an English woman, Emily Waltham, and they eventually begin a relationship that turns into an engagement after only six weeks. Meanwhile, Rachel discovers that Joshua likes her too, and they begin a relationship that lasts until when Rachel finds out about Ross's engagement. After Rachel asks Joshua about marrying, he breaks up with her, and her feelings for Ross return. At Ross's wedding in London at the end of the season, Chandler and Monica sleep together when, after a wedding guest mistakes Monica for Ross' mother, Monica seeks comfort in the arms of a friend. Rachel, depressed by the impending wedding enough to chase away a potential boyfriend in Joshua, attends the wedding at the last minute, intending to tell Ross that she still loves him, but decides not to. Things are thrown into chaos when Ross replaces Emily's name with Rachel's while saying his vows.
