Ross finds out that he must go to China for a week to negotiate for a fossil for the museum. Meanwhile, Joey takes part in a fertility test at NYU. Because of this he can't have sex with his new girlfriend, Melanie. Monica suggests that Joey try "being there for her", but he doesn't understand what she means. Eventually he takes the advice to which Melanie is very pleased. She says that Joey is such a giver, so much so that he's "practically a woman". Which Joey takes in stride.
It's also Rachel birthday. At her party, she receives undesirable presents such as a fruit basket from Joey's girlfriend, Melanie and Travel Scrabble from Chandler. Rachel opens Ross's gift and sees that it is an antique pin the two of them saw months ago that reminded Rachel of one her grandmother had and becomes astonished. Phoebe wonders aloud how much that must've cost and Chandler recounts the time Ross "fell in love with Carol and got her that ridiculously expensive crystal duck," finally exposing Ross's feelings for Rachel.
Rachel decides she must go to the airport to talk to Ross, but just misses him when she gets there. She decides, over the course of the week that Ross is gone, that she does not want to pursue anything even though she thinks it would be "really great". She feels like there would be too much pressure from the group, which already shows in Monica.
On a date with Carl, who she met at Central Perk, Rachel can't stop thinking about Ross. After having a disscusion with him in her head, she decides that she will pursue a relationship with him. She tells Carl that she forgot that she had to pick a friend up at the airport and leaves.
The show ends with Rachel waiting eagerly at the gate for Ross, not knowing that he has come back with a new girlfriend, Julie.

- Rachel decides to go see Ross at the airport to tell him she fell in love. In the last episode of the show Ross will be the one who chases Rachel for the same reason.
