[edit] Plot

Ross and Rachel's monumental first kiss.

Rachel goes out on a date with a man named Michael, but cannot stop thinking about Ross. She gets drunk and then proceeds to borrows someone's cell phone to call Ross for "closure". She leaves a drunken message telling him that she is over him. Later, while Ross is listening to his messages at her apartment, he hears her message. Rachel tries to stop him, but fails. He asks "You're over me? When were you under me?" Ross must then make a decision between Rachel or Julie.

Meanwhile, Monica finds work as Chandler's personal trainer and Phoebe has a hard time trying to get her boyfriend, Scott, to have sex with her. Ross finds Rachel at Central Perk while she is closing. They argue very heatedly and Ross says that he is with Julie and it's too late for a relationship between them. He storms out and Rachel yells that "now I've got closure!". Soon after, Ross re-appears at the doors and they end up passionately kissing.

[edit] Trivia

[edit] General

  • During the 2008 Primetime Emmy Awards, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences honored TV's Most Memorable Moments, determined by an online vote. The kiss between Ross and Rachel was number one.
  • Number 2 in "NBC's 6 Favorite Friends Episodes Countdown"
  • This is the first episode that you hear Gunther's name. When Rachel is closing up the coffee house, if you listen very close you can hear her say, "Goodnight, Gunther."
  • The music that is playing when Ross and Rachel kiss was a studio music clip. The producers wanted to use U2's "With or Without You" but didn't have time to arrange for the rights, so they found a studio music clip that sounded "U2-ish". They used the actual U2 song the next episode.
  • Fritzi Burr, who played the pet shop owner in this episode, also appeared in "The One With The Stoned Guy" where she played Mrs. Tedlock and "The One With Barry And Mindy's Wedding" where she played Mrs. Weinberg.
